Slow Computer? What a Tune-Up Actually Fixes
Every few weeks someone asks me if they need a new computer because everything feels slow. Most of the time the answer is no. Here is what a tune-up actually does, step by step, and the two things it honestly cannot fix.
1. Remove the bloatware
New and even "cleaned up" computers ship with trial antivirus software, manufacturer utilities, toolbars, and other preinstalled junk that runs in the background whether you use it or not. A tune-up starts by going through the full program list and removing anything that isn't earning its keep. On a machine that's a few years old, it's common to find ten or more programs like this that the owner never installed on purpose and never uses.
2. Trim the startup list
Related but distinct: separate from what's installed, there's what launches automatically every time you turn the machine on. Each one adds seconds to boot time and eats memory in the background all day. On Windows, Task Manager's Startup tab shows the full list and lets you disable anything unnecessary. On a Mac, the equivalent is System Settings, General, Login Items. Trimming this list is one of the single biggest wins for a machine that feels sluggish specifically at startup.
3. Clear out adware, junk extensions, and malware
This is the one people underestimate. Adware and browser hijackers rarely announce themselves. They just quietly redirect searches, inject extra ads into pages, or run a background process that eats CPU. A proper tune-up includes a real malware and adware scan, not just a glance at whatever antivirus icon happens to be sitting in the system tray, plus a review of every installed browser extension. If you don't remember installing it, it should probably go.
4. Update the operating system and drivers
Neglected updates cause two different problems: security exposure, and performance. Outdated graphics, chipset, and storage drivers can make an otherwise capable machine feel slow or cause random freezes that look like a hardware problem but aren't. A tune-up brings the OS and drivers current, which by itself fixes some of the "randomly grinds to a halt" complaints we hear.
5. Free up disk space
Temp files, old installers sitting in the Downloads folder, leftover files from uninstalled programs, and duplicate photos or documents all pile up over time. Once a drive gets close to full, especially on an SSD, performance drops noticeably because the drive has less room to work with. Clearing this out is routine housekeeping, but almost nobody does it on their own.
6. Check drive health before anything else gets blamed
This is the step that matters most and gets skipped most often. Every drive, whether it's a traditional hard drive or an SSD, reports its own health data (SMART status, wear level, reallocated sectors). A drive that's starting to fail produces the exact same symptoms as software bloat: slow boots, programs that hang, files that take forever to open. A real tune-up checks this data directly instead of guessing. If the drive is failing, no amount of cleanup will fix it, and that changes the whole conversation about what to do next.
7. Clean up an overloaded browser
Years of accumulated cache, dozens of pinned tabs that auto-reload, sync conflicts between old profiles, and extensions that were installed once and forgotten all add up. Clearing cache, consolidating profiles, and pruning extensions usually makes the browser (which is where most people spend all day anyway) feel dramatically snappier.
What a tune-up cannot fix
Two things won't respond to any of the above, and an honest tune-up will tell you which one you're dealing with instead of just running the cleanup steps and hoping. A drive that's genuinely failing needs to be replaced and your data backed up off it immediately, not nursed along. And a machine with a CPU or RAM configuration that's simply too old for what modern software and browsers expect will still feel slow after a perfect cleanup, because the ceiling is the hardware itself, not the configuration.

Sometimes it means you find out your drive is close to failing while there's still time to get your files off it safely.
