Still on Windows 10? Here Is What It Is Costing You in 2026
Windows 10 had a great run. But its time is up, and if your business is still running it, the clock is ticking louder than you might realize. The good news is you have a little runway left. The catch is that the runway ends this October, and pretending otherwise gets expensive.
Where Things Actually Stand
Let me lay out the timeline plainly, because the dates are what matter here.
Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, no more free security patches. To soften the landing, Microsoft offered Extended Security Updates, or ESU, a paid program that keeps the critical security patches coming for a while longer.
But ESU is a bridge, not a destination. It runs only through October 13, 2026, with no follow-on for most businesses after that. The fees also rise each year, so it gets more expensive the longer you lean on it. Once that window closes, Windows 10 gets no patches at all. None.
What "No Patches" Really Means
An unpatched operating system does not stop working. That is the trap. It keeps running, everything looks fine, and meanwhile every newly discovered vulnerability stays open forever. Attackers love end-of-life systems precisely because the holes never get fixed.
So the cost of staying on Windows 10 past October 2026 shows up in two ways:
- Security risk. Every new exploit is a permanent open door. This is exactly the kind of weakness ransomware crews scan for.
- Compliance risk. If you handle payment data, health records, or anything covered by regulations or cyber insurance, running an unsupported OS can put you out of compliance and void coverage right when you need it.
That second one catches a lot of owners off guard. Your insurer or your industry rules may simply not allow an unsupported operating system, regardless of how well it seems to be running.
The Other Wrinkle: Not Every PC Can Upgrade
"Fine," you might think, "I will just upgrade everyone to Windows 11." For some machines, great. For others, not so fast.
Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements, including TPM 2.0 and newer processors. A meaningful chunk of older but otherwise perfectly functional PCs are simply blocked from the upgrade. That means part of your fleet is not a software update at all. It is a hardware replacement, and that takes budget and lead time.
This is the real reason to start now even though you have until October. You may need to buy machines, and you do not want to be doing that in a panic in September.
Your Migration Plan: Buy Time, But Plan Now
Here is the approach I walk clients through. Use ESU if you need a few more months, but treat that as breathing room to execute this plan, not an excuse to stall.
- Inventory every machine. You cannot plan for what you have not counted. List every device, its specs, and what it is used for.
- Check Windows 11 eligibility. For each machine, confirm whether it meets the requirements (TPM 2.0, supported CPU, and the rest). Sort into "can upgrade" and "must replace."
- Budget the replacements. For the machines that cannot upgrade, get real numbers now and spread the purchases across your remaining timeline instead of one giant October hit.
- Test your line-of-business apps. Before you roll Windows 11 out widely, confirm your critical software actually works on it. Surprises here are the difference between a smooth migration and a bad week.
- Schedule and train. Plan the rollout in waves, not all at once, and give staff a heads-up plus a little training so day one on the new setup is calm.
The Bottom Line
Windows 10 is not going to crash and burn on October 14, 2026. It is just going to quietly become a liability: unpatched, possibly non-compliant, and an easy mark. The smart move is to use whatever ESU time you need as cover while you methodically inventory, budget, test, and migrate.
